“Your daughter is Manglik. The marriage will fail unless you do the puja.” Few sentences in astrology have caused more fear, more broken proposals and more wasted money than this one. Manglik dosha is real in the sense that classical texts describe it. It is also far more common, far more often cancelled, and far less dangerous than most families are told. This guide explains what it actually is, how to check whether it truly applies to you, and the myths you can safely put down.
The short answer
- Manglik dosha (also called Mangal dosha, Kuja dosha or Bhauma dosha, মঙ্গলিক দোষ in Bangla) is a condition where Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart that relate to marriage and home life.
- By the broad rules, roughly half of all people qualify as Manglik. A condition shared by half the population cannot mean that half of all marriages are doomed.
- Classical astrology lists many cancellations. In a large share of charts the dosha is weak or cancelled once these are checked.
- Where it does apply, it describes temperament and friction (Mars energy: drive, impatience, strong will) that a couple can understand and manage. It is not a prediction of death, divorce or disaster.
What makes a chart “Manglik”
Mars is the planet of energy, courage, heat and conflict. Manglik dosha is said to form when Mars occupies one of these houses, counted from the ascendant (lagna):
| House | What that house covers | Why Mars there is watched |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, temperament, body | A forceful, impatient personality, and Mars aspects the 7th house of marriage |
| 2nd | Family, speech, wealth | Harsh words and family friction (included in South Indian tradition) |
| 4th | Home, mother, peace of mind | Restlessness at home; Mars aspects the 7th |
| 7th | Spouse and partnership | Direct Mars energy in the marriage itself |
| 8th | Longevity of marriage, in-laws, sudden events | The house most often used to frighten people |
| 12th | Bed comforts, expenses, separation | Mismatch in intimacy or spending; Mars aspects the 7th |
Many astrologers also check the same houses counted from the Moon and from Venus. Here is the problem: Mars in any of 6 houses out of 12 is already half the possibilities. Add the Moon and Venus checks and most people alive would be Manglik by one rule or another. That alone should tell you the label, on its own, cannot carry the weight it is given.
The cancellations most people are never told about
Classical and traditional texts list several conditions that reduce or cancel Manglik dosha. Traditions differ on the details, and a careful astrologer will tell you which ones apply in your chart. The commonly cited ones include:
- Mars is strong in its own sign or exalted: in Aries (Mesha), Scorpio (Vrischika) or Capricorn (Makara). A dignified Mars behaves with discipline rather than aggression.
- Jupiter aspects or joins Mars, or aspects the 7th house. Jupiter’s influence is widely held to soften Mars considerably.
- Mars is a beneficial planet for your ascendant. For Cancer (Karka) and Leo (Simha) ascendants, Mars rules good houses and is a yogakaraka or strong benefic. Its placement is judged very differently.
- Specific sign placements listed in traditional texts, for example Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, or in the 12th in Taurus or Libra.
- Both partners are Manglik. This is the best-known cancellation: similar Mars energy on both sides is considered balanced.
- The partner’s chart has Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same sensitive houses, which many traditions treat as balancing the dosha.
You will also hear that “Manglik dosha ends at age 28”. This is a popular belief rather than a firm classical rule. What is true is that Mars energy usually matures with age, and people learn to handle it better.
What actually decides a marriage in the chart
A marriage reading that looks only at Mars is like a medical check-up that only takes your temperature. An honest reading looks at the whole picture:
- The 7th house, its ruler and Venus: the main indicators of partnership in any chart.
- The Navamsa (D9), the divisional chart for marriage. A weak-looking marriage in the birth chart is often much stronger in the D9. We explain why in our guide to divisional charts.
- Timing: which mahadasha and antardasha you are running. Marriage usually happens in periods connected to the 7th house, its lord or Venus, and it shows when the relationship needs more patience.
- Compatibility between two charts: Kundali Milan (Ashtakoot guna matching) plus a real comparison of temperaments. A low Ashtakoot score and a Manglik label are both just starting points.
Six Manglik myths you can let go of
1. “A Manglik person’s spouse will die.”
This is the most damaging claim and it has no place in honest practice. A chart placement shared by half of humanity does not predict death. We do not predict death, ever, and nobody should make that claim to you about a marriage.
2. “Manglik people can only marry other Manglik people.”
Two Manglik partners is one cancellation, not the only one. Many non-Manglik pairings work perfectly well once Jupiter’s influence, sign dignity and the rest of both charts are checked.
3. “You must first marry a tree, a pot or an idol.”
These symbolic rituals (such as Kumbh vivah) are folk customs. They are not required by classical astrology, and nobody should be pressured into them. If a family chooses a ritual for its own peace of mind, that is their choice, not a necessity.
4. “Manglik dosha means the marriage will end in divorce.”
Mars in these houses can bring strong opinions, impatience and arguments. Many couples with a Manglik partner have long, happy marriages because they understand that energy and give it healthy outlets: work, sport, shared goals. Awareness is the real remedy.
5. “You need an expensive puja or a red coral immediately.”
No genuine reading needs you to pay for an emergency remedy. A red coral strengthens Mars, which can actually increase problems if Mars rules difficult houses in your chart. Stones should only be suggested after your whole chart is checked, with the reasoning explained.
6. “An online calculator says I’m Manglik, so I am.”
Calculators apply the broad rule only. They rarely check cancellations, and they depend on an accurate birth time: near a house boundary, a short error can move Mars into or out of a Manglik house. See how accurate your birth time needs to be.
If the dosha does apply: what actually helps
When a careful check shows Mars really is strong and uncancelled in a marriage house, the useful response is practical, not fearful:
- Know the pattern. Expect strong will and quick temper on the Mars side, and agree as a couple how you handle disagreements before they happen.
- Give Mars a job. Physical exercise, demanding work and shared projects channel Mars energy well.
- Check timing. Some periods are better for marriage than others. Choosing a supportive dasha period or a good muhurta can make a real difference.
- Compare both charts properly, including the Navamsa, not just Mars.
- Prayer and discipline in your own tradition, and charity on Tuesdays (Mars’s day), are traditional and cost nothing.
- Gemstones only with full reasoning, and only if Mars is a beneficial planet for your ascendant.

Common questions
What is Manglik dosha? It is a condition in Vedic astrology where Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. It is traditionally linked with friction in marriage, but it is very common and often cancelled by other factors in the chart.
How common is Manglik dosha? Very common. Mars falls in one of the six Manglik houses in about half of all charts when counted from the ascendant alone, and in even more when the Moon and Venus are also used.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik? Yes. Many such marriages work well. What matters is whether the dosha is cancelled, how strong it is, and how the two full charts compare, not the label alone.
Does Manglik dosha go away after 28? That is a popular belief rather than a firm classical rule. Mars energy often becomes easier to handle with maturity, but the placement itself does not change.
Is Manglik dosha dangerous? No. It describes temperament and potential friction, not death or disaster. Claims that a Manglik person’s spouse will die are fear-selling, not honest astrology.
How do I know if my Manglik dosha is cancelled? A careful astrologer checks Mars’s sign, Jupiter’s aspect, your ascendant, the specific house and sign combination, and your partner’s chart. Online calculators usually skip these checks.
Do I need a puja or red coral for Manglik dosha? Not automatically. Many charts need no remedy at all. Red coral can make things worse if Mars rules difficult houses for you, so it should only be worn after a full chart check.
What details do you need for a Manglik check? Date, time and place of birth. For a match, both partners’ details. If the birth time is uncertain, tell us; rectification or Prashna can help.
The short version
Manglik dosha is a description of Mars energy in a chart, shared by about half of all people and often cancelled. It deserves a careful look, not panic. Check the cancellations, read the whole chart and both partners’ charts, and choose your timing well.
A marriage is built by two people. Mars only describes part of the temperament they bring to it.
